Could you please explain why pro-choice Catholics who ignore church teaching on the legalization of abortion are worse than pro-war Catholics who ignore church teaching on just war?
I really want to know why I should think of the one, but not the other, as cafeteria Catholics.
Only evil people are “pro-war”. Sometimes good requires that war be fought. That does not make those who defend themselves “pro-war”. Just because you or I think that a particular war does not fit the Just War Doctrine doesn’t mean that we are right. Our judgment is imperfect. Abortion, on the other hand, is never justified. There is no Just Abortion Doctrine.
As easy way to tell the difference is to look in the Catechism and compare what it has to say about each of these two subjects. The teaching on “just war” rests upon the prudential judgement of legitimate authority; the Church’s teaching on abortion is unequivical in all cases.
