Mark Brumley on Important Political Issues

by Steve Ray on October 7, 2004

“Are some issues in the upcoming election more important than others? Absolutely. I say that as a long-time advocate of what’s called a Consistent Life Ethic.  My thinking has always been that the alternative to a Consistent Life Ethic is an Inconsistent Life Ethic, which doesn’t make sense.  Prolife Catholics have really no choice but to be consistently prolife—that is, to defend human life against all attacks and to support whatever fosters respect for human life, including insofar as possible the conditions under which human life is actually lived.“ For the full story, click here.

Discovering the Cave!

by Steve Ray on October 7, 2004

1 Sam 22:1-2     “So David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam; and when his brothers and all his father’s household heard of it, they went down there to him. Everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him; and he became captain over them. Now there were about four hundred men with him.“

2 Sam 23:13-14     “Then three of the thirty chief men went down and came to David in the harvest time to the cave of Adullam, while the troop of the Philistines was camping in the valley of Rephaim. David was then in the stronghold, while the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem.“

Making the Footprints of God video/DVD series is exciting, and adventure of discovery!  How many people have ever seen David’s Cave of Adullam? Pilgrims never go there. Who has seen this biblical site where King David hid out – the King David from whom Jesus received the messianic title “the Son of David”?

Even though it is located on the map, it is out on a small mountain in the West Bank and behind barbed wire. We needed a 4-wheeler and an armed guide to get there. On top of that, the cave is hidden and it took us over an hour of scouring the hillsides to find the cave hidden in the underbrush.

But, WOW, there it was! Several entrances into an underground cave that expands out into several chambers. It was dark and damp and I could imagine David with his Mighty Men sitting atop the entrances watching for enemies in the valley below between Bethlehem and Hebron.

I sat for a long time meditating on the Scripture and on the life of David. Most priests and religious may not realize that when they read Psalms 57 and 142 in the Liturgy of the Hours (e.g., Week 1 Sunday, Evening Prayer), that David was probably sitting right here in the mouth of this cave. It was marvelous and this location will certainly be highlighted in our upcoming David and Solomon: Expanding the Kingdom.

My wife Janet and I also found Shiloh in the West Bank where the Ark of the Covenant (foreshadowing Mary) resided for over 200 years before arriving in Jerusalem. We found the Valley of Elah where David fought Goliath, and we worked our way through the Israeli barracades to visit Hebron where David was king for seven years.

I can’t wait to go back and begin filming. Most of the sites we show in our next video/DVD will be new to almost everyone.
