The American Civil Liberties Union filed suit yesterday against the federal government over grants made by the Department of Health and Human Services to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. When the USCCB applied for the grants to assist the victims of human trafficking, it stated that it would not subcontract with agencies that offer abortion or contraception. The ACLU alleges that the arrangement is an unconstitutional.

You know, this reminds me of arguments I have had with my son. He is a dyed in the wool Socialist and thinks that Socialism/Liberalism is the sure cure all for all the world’s ailments. Of course, like all of his ilk, he despises the Church and has nothing pleasant to say about Her. To him, the Church is this tyrannical and bullying authoritarian entity that has abused people throughout history.

When he says this stuff, that is when I A.) remind him that it has been the Church that began orphanages, hospitals, etc. I remind him of all the apostolates around the world dedicated to helping the poor and oppressed. I also remind him of RERUM NAVARUM (he is a big unionist and thinks unions are God’s gift to mankind!)

Then I B.) ask him when was the last time any Socialist/Liberal organization did anything other than to agitate and cause trouble with the existing social order. In other words, when did they ever actually put down their placards and HELP someone in the practical way the Church has?

And I have also asked him when was the last time he actually went out and fed the poor or visited the sick.

Yeah — Socialists. All mouth and no works. They are nothing but a bunch of troublemakers for those of us who want to do what God wants done for the poor and oppressed.
