Cardinal Justin Rigali of Philadelphia and Bishop Kevin Rhoades of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania have exptressed “strong support” for the work of Christopher West in a letter dated August 10 and released September 17. West is a research fellow of the Theology of the Body Institute, which seeks to make Pope John Paul II’s general audiences on marriage and Humanae Vitae more accessible to contemporary culture.

As a Veterinary Medical Dr who is frequently trying to ‘correct’ the ‘news’ that is given regarding different animal and human diseases, I believe many of the folks who criticized Christopher West are naïve.

They assume that the Nightline TV folks want to give a fair and concise view of the beautiful Theology of the Body message. They further assume that these folks will be moved by the presentation.

If memory serves, the entire aired segment was less than 15 minutes, some of which was reporter interpretation. And if they only talked to Christopher West for 1 hour ( and it sounds like it was _much_ more), they could easily take his words out of context and intersperse them with their own ‘spin’.

This is never more evident than in the Gospel itself when the Devil uses the Word of God to tempt Jesus to ‘throw himself from the top of the temple’.

It is very easy to take a brief snippet of talk / or sentence and preface it yourself, and conclude something very different than the intended message.
Don’t we all remember the big ‘uproar’ from the protestant world when Pope Benedict issued the “Responses to some Questions regarding certain aspects of the Doctrine on the Church”.
Most newspaper headlines read something like “Pope calls non Catholic churches ‘defective’”. Of course, this was taken out of context of this entire sentence, which then takes this in a completely different tone.
“It follows that these separated churches and Communities, though we believe they suffer from defects, are deprived neither of significance nor importance in the mystery of salvation. ”

If we realize that the current tone of the National media is trying to discredit the saving message of Jesus, is it no wonder they are trying to splinter the group from within?

Anyone who has listened to Christopher West understands the beauty of this message. Yet if you would listen to a 1 or 2 minute part of any such talk you might not fully understand.

Christopher West’ S only error is trusting.

But isn’t that what we are all called to do? Maybe that message will get to some who may not have understood God’s beautiful plan without this introduction.

Pray that our media outlets learn that instead of slanting every story to their world view, that they can at least be honest.
Or at least, that is one man’s opinion.
