Hi F.S.

Technically speaking, there is only one community named Couples for Christ (CFC). That is the group with the formal name “Couples For Christ Global Mission Foundation, Inc.” This group has been in existence since the 1980s.

The other community you might be referring to calls itself Couples for Christ Foundation for Family and Life (FFL). However, the contention is that FFL cannot appropriate the name “Couples for Christ” because it does not follow the International Council – which is the highest authority in the CFC community.

Now your questions:

Which one is legitimate? Legally speaking, CFC is the legitimate group. In essence, the documents that provide the corporate identity of Couples for Christ in the Philippines is held by the International Council – thus, Couples for Christ Global Mission Foundation, Inc. is the holder of the CFC corporate identity. FFL has a pending case in Philippine courts regarding this matter; to date, there has no final definite resolution.

Are they both in line with Church teaching? Yes, very much so. Both communities give Catholic teachings on any Catholic topic :-D.

Does the Church recognize one and not the other? Recognition-wise, both groups are recognized by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines. However, this national-level recognition is affected by various factors on the parishes on the ground; hence some parish priests recognize CFC only while others recognize FFL only, forcing the other to operate clandestinely.

At the international level, only CFC holds the official recognition by the Holy See. check this link http://www.couplesforchristglobal.org/images/vatican_recognition_pdf6.pdf
For its part, FFL is still in the process of being recognized. A main contention is that FFL cannot use the CFC recognition because it was awarded to the community in general, not to any individual representing CFC (it happens that that individual was a former leader of CFC who is now a leader in FFL).

That is basically the short story of it.
