Old Aerial Photos of Jerusalem

Jerusalem1910-markedBelow: original pictures; Above: my notations

The Old city sure has changed in since these photos were taken. Does anybody know what the date these were taken?

Since we arrived in Jerusalem today with the Franciscan University pilgrims, I thought you would all enjoy this old aerial photo with my notations.

Steve, Could you please mark where Golgotha is on the map? I don't see it there or are my eyes not working properly?

STEVE RAY HERE: The Church of the Holy Sepulchre (marked on the aerial photo) is built over Calvary (Golgotha) and the Tomb. If you could zoom in enough, you would see two domes. The smaller is over Golgotha; the larger over the tomb.

Abraham did NOT offer Isaac as a sacrifice in the second century BC. 2000 BC is more like it.

STEVE RAY HERE: Opps, you're right. I meant 2,000 BC. Thanks for catching that. I will have it fixed tonight.

Tha date on the marked photo for the sacrifice of Isaac by Abraham must be wrong. That occurred long before David’s time which is given an earlier date.

I enjoy this site, Thanks.

Steve, thanks for putting these up. My wife and I lived in Jerusalem as Protestant missionaries for two years (1976-1978) before entering the Church (largely due to the witness of the Palestinians Catholics) and we had the best time examining the photos for familiar places.

Hi Mom & Dad, Rick & Valerie & Lisa! It looks like you’re having a great time. You’re missing the new 10 inches of snow we got last night. We really miss you and Thomas and Kaylee had fun seeing you on the computer. Thomas & Kaylee said they want to go with you next time. We love you.

Gee, I don’t see much water available for all of those more than 3000 baptisms by immersion on the first Pentecost. Just kidding!

The current site of Golgotha is not the correct one. I’m probably the only one who knows where it is. The Jewish building project has since covered it – Golgotha along with Christ’s tomb no longer exists. The Church of the Holy Sepulcher is not the real site. Very sorry, guys – its the truth.
